There is a link between the game and the folk song. Tetris was created by Russian game designer Alexey Pajitnov in 1984 and it was sent to a Hungarian publisher in 1986. It was published by many companies all over the world, until Nintendo acquired it for the Gameboy in 1989, when Hirokazu Tanaka arranged the official Tetris Theme based on the folk song. The original game design was heavily influenced by Russian architecture and colours, and ‘Korobeiniki’ captured the frantic energy that was needed to win the game! It soon became one of the most iconic and recognised game tunes of all time.
