October 9, 2025 From the Bible History, Luke 9:1-6 1 Jesus called the twelve together and gave them power and authority to cast out all demons and heal the sick. 2 Then he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3 Jesus said to them, "Take nothing for your journey: no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, and not even two undergarments. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there and set out from there on your next journey. 5 If they do not receive you, shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them." 6 The twelve went out and traveled from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere. Sending the Twelve Disciples Power and Authority Comes from the Lord Jesus' ministry in Galilee was drawing to an end. Jesus therefore sought to expand his ministry in a short space of time by sending out his twelve disciples. He gave the disciples two missions: (1) to preach the kingdom of God and (2) to cast out demons and heal the sick. Jesus always sought to free people from physical and spiritual bondage, and his disciples' mission was the same. Along with his mission, Jesus also gave them the power and authority to fulfill it. The disciples were commanded to set out on their missionary journeys without any preparation. Jesus told them, "Take nothing for the journey: no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, and not even two undergarments." In other words, he meant, "Go as you are." This was to instill in the disciples a sense of urgency and to train them to rely completely on God. Did you know that when God gives us a mission, He also gives us the power to fulfill it? Let us too be those who move forward in faith, not those who retreat in fear. Modern Application Jesus's command in this passage should not be seen as universal. Rather, it should be understood as a command given in a tense situation (see Luke 22:36). Jesus's urgency is clear. (1) He commanded them to leave immediately, not prepare. The disciples needed to focus all their attention on the evangelistic opportunity before them. (2) He commanded them to stay in the same home once they found a welcoming home until they left the town, so as not to linger in the same place for too long. (3) He commanded them to shake off the dust from their feet when leaving a town that did not accept the gospel. At the time, religious Jews had the custom of shaking off the dust from their feet when returning to Palestine from Gentile lands to avoid bringing any impurity with them. Jesus' disciples performed this act to demonstrate that the Israelites who did not accept the gospel were unworthy of God's kingdom. Let us meditate on what kind of time we are living in now. Has the time come, but we have put it off for one day? Today's Prayer: Almighty God, you know everything about me. Show me what I need to do now. Help me to move forward with faith, rather than fear and retreat. I pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
