Happy Indigenous People’s Day 2025

Since I was a young child, I never felt right celebrating anything connected to Christopher Columbus. Deep down, I always understood what those times truly meant for our Indigenous people — especially for those from the island I come from. Because of that, I never encouraged my children to celebrate it either, even when it was part of school activities.

When the name of this day was finally changed, I knew in my heart that our ancestors were moving through us — working their magic to help restore truth, honor, and justice for those who came before us.

I am deeply proud to come from Taíno lineage and culture. I release through me the pain and suffering my ancestors endured, and instead, I uplift their strength, wisdom, and spirit. I honor them with every breath and keep their memory high, giving them the glory they have always deserved.

Cheers to all our Indigenous warriors who fought — and continue to fight — for us all. We are still here, standing strong, walking beside you in spirit and in truth. ✊🏽🌎
