Ask him if during that time.... did he find folks charitable. My Great Aunt Emma always had her backdoor locked with the screen door propped up with food onboard table for men late in the day with a wash basin & clean towels & a cake of soap in a dingle brick. She also said she had squares cut from flannel sheets to stack as wash clothes for them to use. She said "everyone needed to feel clean & human". I so loved her. Her Sugar cookies were HUGE with 2 raisins in the middle as a decoration π₯°

Why did he become a hobo? Was it by choice or circumstance? What did his family think about it and why did he stop (age, injury)?

What types of things did they use for security / early warning devices. How did they deal with bugs. Did he ever feel the need for stealth camping. Did crumpled up newspapers in your clothing really help and what did he do for the cold weather.

Please ask him what motivated him to pursue that lifestyle. Maybe some stories about people he met along the way. Enjoy your trip, James!

How did they receive the news? Know which places to go to? Receive letters or messages from family? Basically, was there any system beyond word of mouth or drawn symbols ?

Please ask about what he thinks of the world today, career wise. Is there more homeless? Are people less caring? Did he get help from people? Does it feel like people have it easier?

Please ask: recount some kindness shown to you as you traveled. My grandmother was very proud the hobos told her she had good markings for other hobos.

WayPoint Survival
In 2 weeks, Lord willing, I am planning to go to Duluth, MN. to interview a gentleman who was a hobo for 50 years and trained by the old-timers who rode steam trains. What questions would you like for me to ask him? Please put them in the comment section below. Thanks!
