Bonus video! For this Halloween, let's talk about the Silent Hill movie.
I know fans of the series aren't too fond of this film. But I've always enjoyed it for its atmosphere and spectacular visual design. For a video game movie made in the 2000s, it was a notch above its contemporary.

@gab_gallard

It's the only Hollywood made videogame adaptation that I actually like. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but it captures this melancholic sadness vibes of the first games quite well while being entertaining on it's own right. I think the backlash that it received from the videogame community was undeserved.

It works because the director gave a damn. He became a fan. He did due diligence on the research. He had others get in on it. And he made it his own. Not a lazy copy. Not complete nonsense. It worked in it's own right and in context of the series. It was a good adaptation.

It's a fine movie and in its own way is even a good adaptation. Was there obviously some studio, cash-in greed such as using only SH2 music for a SH1 story sure but this movie had a clear artistic vision as well.

I've recently discovered through the sequel's trailer that the director for this franchise was none other than Christophe Gans from The Brotherhood of the Wolf. That movie was awesome. Great storytelling too. It's like Jaws on land, but with a native American kung fu.

At least it wasn't made by Uwe Boll

I love the first one. I don't know why but I like the aesthetics

I liked the film very much

@angbald

I loved it but I also haven't played the games.

@novurdim

That's not true, a lot of the fans do like the first movie.

@bigmoviefreak

It was brilliant! I’ve been waiting for a 4K Blu-ray for ages. I might have to cave in to Shout Factory’s edition.

There was some cool stuff, but it's kinda contrasting when the games are carefully crafted subtle horror, and the villain of the movie gets barbed wire forced through every hole in her body then explodes.

I say it's OK. Good visuals and good costume for the monsters especially Pyramid Head. Sequel, well the monster design are nice. That's it. Hope Return to SH does well and you can tell that the 2nd was so bad that they don't mention it. Not in like ignore story since all SH games tell separate stories of their own but like they pretend that movie didn't exist.

I always recommend this movie with the caveat that the story isn't very good, but the atmosphere and presentation is pretty top

I love those movies as their own thing tbh. They're terrible adaptations but very fun movies.

Hated it. I recently played the first games last year then went to see the film with cautious optimism and it wasn't as good as people led me to believe. Every change to the story was made to the worse, and the sequel is even more dreadful to put through how the screwed up my favorite game on the series Needless to say I'm not looking forward to the third movie.

Loved the games and I liked the movie. Does just enough preserve the "vibe" of the games while still doing its own thing with regard to the storytelling in a way that's effective in it's own right. I find it hard to criticize when they're trying to tell a 10-20 hour long video game story in a 2 hour movie. Second movie sucked though

I enjoyed the games and loved the movie. They are different but that’s okay by me

I also like the first Silent Hill movie. Not only is it one of the better adaptations of a video game, it's also decent in it's own right. Never seen the second movie, but from what I've heard about it, I'm not missing much.

@The_Reviewist

Never understood the disdain many have for this film. In my estimation it’s both one of the first good films made as a man adaptation of a video game, and also a pretty good reworking of the borderline incomprehensibly written plot of the first game. Now… Silent Hill Revelations… that’s a proper pile of crap.

i firmly believe this movie is so hated because it isnt an adaptation of a single silent hill game, but i think thats a strength rather than a weakness. this is not to say the movie is amazing, far from it, but it most certainly rising above the ire it has endured for over a decade
