Chekhov's Dragon might be shown flying lazily overhead early in the campaign but it must play a bigger part before campaign's end.

But give someone in the party a ring of invisibility first, of course.

This was the cover of my dad's copy of The Hobbit, the first book I ever read. I was lucky enough to find a dog eared version of the same edition in a charity shop a few years ago. Smaug will always be the Ur-Dragon in my mind.

I've got three in my West Marches atm, and the highest PC level is 4. They just took a beating from a pair of wyverns (ate their dogs), so they're probably not in a hurry to challenge any flying reptilian predators.

Been playing Tales of Argosa with some AD&D 1e bits I favor, set in Essos and Westeros. Recently incorporated dragon riding rules from the old Mystara TSR setting!

Meh. Most of the dragons died ages ago. Their may still be 1 or 2 hiding beneath mountains or some such..

I'm guilty of that thinking, where a dragon seems like too much for my low level group. But I did have a closing session dragon attack while they were escaping on a pirate ship which went well. It was only 2 rounds and 1 PC died, but they blinded it and forced it to retreat.

I hate to admit but I barely used any dragons in all my years as a DM. We're now playing Curse of Strahd, so again the chances of having a dragon are thin. But once this run is done I do intent to make a campaing centered on dragons.... and dungeons :)
