As far as the color pie goes, I've always been a huge black magic enthusiast, so I'll always have fond memories of Necro and the Black Summer. 🖤

Oh man, brings back memories... I was mainly black, from the first Hypnotic Spectre in one of my first 4th ed. booster packs. And of course I tried Necropotence when it first came out! The power!

when i was a kid i had greed in my deck and everyone said i was stupid. my deck used greed and drainlife/syphon souls. when necro came out it was more of the same with me being the dumb black player. then the world chanpionships came out and folks saw necros full potential. black summer was the happiest time of my life! while other players were trading to get the components for this overpowered black deck i was already primed! 🎉 i miss the old school days before the internet where you could terrorize your block with a homebrew before the world caught on

I've heard that Necropotence was initially considering the worst card in Ice Age. People decried it for making you skip your draw and essentially forcing you to pay life for cards. But in the end it taught magic players two valuable lessons: 1: Life is a resource. 2: One card is worth more than one life 95% of the time.

The genius of Phil Faglio - the old man is hugging a huge pile of gold coins, but there is one coin not within his grasp and he is staring at it.

For me, Lich was the granddaddy of these black cards (even it was technically not 'pay life for cards')

Notice Greed also only cost 1 black which makes it so much better too. I think it’s under utilized, might even be better than sylvan in some cases.

I always wanted to play greed in my black decks back in the day. The 4 mana cost was just too much of a ball breaker.

I play 2 in my Deadguy OS deck. It is so good. Please delete this so others don't realize ;)

Timmy the Sorcerer
Greed introduced the idea that black should be able to exchange life for cards. It has inspired nearly every black life-for-cards card to follow, including Necropotence and Phyrexian Arena.
