Been YouTubing about 6 years, I’ve seen some friends try to imitate their idols, get popular, but also get burnt out HARD. Being yourself first and foremost, not overlooking who you are in your pursuit of success, is the only way to keep having fun on YouTube.

So true. As a miniscule content creator myself, i refuse to bow to the algorithm and be fake just for views. Id rather be myself and unpopular than be popular for being something im not.

Good advice for when you know who yourself is and what be yourself means for you. Maybe that knowledge will come to me before the world ends, but I don't have hope for that anymore.

It seems like if you follow trends you get some immediate results but ultimately will never stand out because thousands others are doing the same thing.

I hoped on to a game with a friend of a friend who was a content creator, and you can 100% tell when they are being disingenuous or just doing things for content. It might get hidden in a YouTube video but it is pretty apparent in the moment. Not saying you shouldnt do it but having to pretend gets tiring pretty fast and is probabaly the reason a lot of creators get burnt out very quickly

Took me a long while to figure out what I genuinely like doing. Turns out it's reading comics live and doing voices. Haven't stopped for nearly 3 years now and don't plan to any time soon

Be the cringe freak. If you let your dignity and worry about what others think of you it’s over

I'm starting up myself, at the moment just sharing raw videos of gameplay, but sometimes there is some funny moments and these funny moments are then uploaded as shorts. The shorts has been somehow gaining traction, so I guess if you think its funny gameplay moments, share it as shorts

Thanks so much! I just started my channel and I worry about if I'm doing it right. It's refreshing to be reminded that my work is unique.

Once I get into editing videos, I actually plan on having direct references to some of my favorite YouTubers at the beginning of some videos before getting into my own stuff, mostly because I think it would be funny to jumpscare someone with a perfectly tuned & timed "What I Love" that if you synced up with one of Scruffy's videos would actually sound good. And all because I just like references and detail, lol

I been doing YouTube for like 11 or 12 years now? And in that time I learn so much like being yourself is so important because people want genuineness and authentistey. So when people say be yourself they really godamn mean it. Of course you can edit things out if you don't feel comfortable having them in but you get my point.

Beware of the low hanging fruit. Don't be like these "[thing] IS WOKE" type of person who just stirs shit for views. It taints the soul, you will be perpetually unhappy, you will be unable to enjoy things because of the type of audience you will amass. There are one too many of these types of creaters, and you can see it plain as day that they are miserable. Don't be like them.

Be yourself! Unless your true self is genuinely insufferable, then maybe you need to try something else.

Im not following the standard youtube rules of trying to catch up with the algo. I just post whatever the hell i want i wanna share. Even if its dogwater. I liked making it. And ill do it whenever i want instead of trying to be consistent. Im not looking for fame, im looking to share.

Coming from a guy who's only relatively popular videos is pouring butterscotch on a fossil and a loud window unit sans window... Post whatever you find interesting or fun. How much effort you put into it is determined by how much you want it to go off. I dont want to be a YouTuber, but i like to use my account as a repository of fun times i have with friends, several dozen private videos. Nobody will be likely to see them. Some are even edited, clips, compilations. We watch them on occasion to laugh at our ridiculous selves in video game antics or regail scenery from road trips. If you want to YouTube. Its that kind of stuff you just gotta be ok with showing the world. For me, its private memories. Toy a YouTuber, your memories are up for auction. Just be you, do what you want, then post that for the world to see. a "this is what i do for fun"
