Yo, ever heard of "Malo" - one of those bands that played more of the east coast than west coast, yet was played more on the radio in the west.. sort of latin jazz meets soul rock meets psychedelic pop. kind of the fathers of sophisti-pop, whereas uk band "everything but the girl" and sade would carry it through the 80s and 90s. Malo was the hipster younger sibling of Santana.. actually I think one of the people were actually related. Anyway, side note, adhd moment, little know fact that most of 80s industrial was heavily influenced by soul/motown. . . most people would never make the connection given the gothic sound of the music but occasionally, you'd hear the influence in vocal techniques. oh and for mashups, you gotta check out Mr. @BillMcClintockMashups for just how well motown and metal combine, I'd recommend looking up "danzig and the temptations - mother was a rolling stone" or "Ozzy Osbourne, Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell, and the Four Tops - Ain't No Shadow Dark Enough" If you're lost for material, you shoudl check out Linda Perry (solo) vs Never The Bride (Live at ULU) vs Sass Jordan (Rats album) and everything by "Concrete Blonde" or just watch the film "Pump Up The Volume (1989)" the unofficial soundtrack is a real vision of what the music scene was like back then.. also, it'st rue, not well spoken of but there were a lot of pirate radio stations, people using crystal radio sets to cb radios to yeah, more advanced setups... on a similar note, you should check out EBN - which was a "performer" who made music using clips from media... the old fashion slice and splice way. It would look like nothing today... let alone the just the new wave / industrial scene where people where many had created new instruments, amps, had to retool technology, synths in new ways.. you really couldn't have a synth you didn't have to modify with a soldering gun, e.g. take part and modify, essentially become a garage engineer... I mean, sure you could buy a synth and play it, but if you were in a band, you had to keep modifying it and hope it didn't burst into flames. you'd see al ittle of that reflected in the tv show (based on the film, obviously) of "Fame" uou know, that's worth a review too, especially in the influencer age... it's kind of cheesy but oh so more grounded than say glee. https://kidsfromfamemedia.blogspot.com/p/episode-guide.html they start out strong in pilot episode... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtgmnhRQir4 it's really the symbol of gen x and millennials.. even if millennials were mostly babes when it was on the air.
