2 months in the making, a 40min long video essay about the decline of engine efficiency, the struggle of searching for the perfect game engine replacement for our video game, and how id Tech can be an example on what traits to look for while covering a 34 year history of id Software's engines, from Commander Keen to Doom Eternal, and how they all compare to their direct competition, such as the Build Engine, CryEngine, and Unreal.

Tune in tomorrow!

Very inspiring watch. I'm actually working on my own 3D engine RN. Yesterday I implemented most of the base VM (a variant of Quake III Arena's Q3VM rewritten in D). I'm also a huge SCUMM buff, which is my goto engine for any 2D adventure game jam.

I think the source engine is really underrated, perhaps because valve isn't open about licensing like unity/unreal But source is really well built and some great mods and games have been developed from it, it has all of the essential features of a 3d FPS game engine and it actually runs well. But yeah, using a 3d engine with 1000 hacks on it just to render 2d sprites at barely even 60fps is batshit, unity is terrible

As opposed to non video based games? I always find it funny how people feel the need to specify it is video based even if context already indicates it yet for other things people don't do that. I don't know if it's universal or just a English quirk.
