So that the ones that are faithful may remain through the trials and tribulations. The ones that are not faithful will be shaken and the trials and tribulations will cause them to turn away from God. (Only God knows who truly turns away from Him in their heart) Ultimately they weren't faithful. This needs to happen so the Lord God can truly see who will remain with Him. This is good for us all.
