Kuper Spyronic

CHAPTER 4 - ALL TIME CRIMEFIGHTER (page 4)

As the next day of work came, and hours began, Rick had but one task to do before he started. Rodney's words and the deep feeling of injustice had finally inspired Richard to realize that holding in abuse isn't strength. Rodney's bravery, and the answering of his prayer, it all drove Richard towards the door of his Boss' office. It was not Kuper Spyronic who had to be brave right then. It was Rick Goodman. As he took a deep breath one last time, he entered Mr. Willikeg's Office. "Ah, Richard, good morning, what brings you to my office?", Mr. Willikeg said in his cheery southern accent. "Mr. Willikeg, I know you've paid well, and I'm glad for the job, but I don't think I can work here anymore. Neither can the others", Rick said, getting right to the point. "Why, what's the matter?", Mr. Willikeg asked. "Well, you're gonna hate me for saying this, but it's your son Bayrell. Ever since me, Rodney, and a few of the others started working here, he's been coming in every other day and messing with the workers, picking on us, calling us names and stuff, even hitting us! I'm sorry, Mr. Willikeg, but I'll have to turn in-"
"Ok, ok, hold on!", Mr. Willikeg cut Rick off, "Are you saying that my Son's been actin' a punk!?"
"Well, yes. I know, hard to believe-"
"Richard, hard to believe? No, absolutely not! I don't got no cameras round here, so I wouldn't know! Ya mean all this time, the son I swear I raised to be a good young man, who I raised with all the love I could, has been harassing the people that's been making the money for his school, home, and life!?"
Richard was astonished. A business owner, caring about his workers? And he raised Bayrell with morals? And affection!
"I dunno about you, Richard, but I am a believer, and my book says Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates!"
"You're a Christian..."
"Catholic more like it. Not that there's much a difference when we read the same book! Let me tell ya something. I may be a wealthy man, but I can never forget why, and I can't forget who, by the grace of god, got this company so far. If I got nobody workin' here, how's this here company standin'?"
"So... you're not gonna be mad I reported your son to you?", Rick asked.
"Course not!", Mr. Willikeg said, "What, did you take me for the type who just lets my workers get mistreated?"
Jerry thought for a moment, his eyes rolling upwards as he then looks down at his desk. "Then again, I can't blame ya, since that tends to be a pattern in this Capitalist dystopia. But when it comes to the Keg and Barrel Factory of Elkton? God as my witness, I'm glad to break that cycle! Without the Barrel makers, without the organizers, how can there be a Keg and Barrel company!?"
Richard smiled, having not expected this reaction, but grateful nonetheless. "Thanks for bringing this to my attention, Goodman", Mr. Willikeg said, "I'll make sure to give a good talkin to Bayrell. You're a brave man for bringing the truth out so boldly. I salute ya."
"Thank you, Mr. Willikeg."
And with that, Richard returned to his work, satisfied that the weight of doubt and fear was lifted at last.
