I think that once you have a solid collection of materials and can tie the basics that you may save money in the long run, but after 30 years of tying, I don’t even care anymore. I love tying flies and finding new materials, but my favorite part is being able to tie patterns exactly the way that I want them.

No, in my experience. Yes your flies will last longer, yes you can have better looking flies, but if you consider the wasted material and unusable feathers etc, you'd be lucky to break even. The only way to save is to be tying bulk and that is a tough business as your charging more per fly, and as a result your market is limited, which leads to long hours and barely scraping a wage by the end of it.
