Pondguru

(prepare for a massive rant....)
I've started offering free samples of Biohome media on the FilterPro website (Biohome page) www.filterpro.co.uk/ so if you're curious about how good this media is and want to crack some open, put it under a microscope or do a wick test (dip the tip in water to see how porous it is) then this is your opportunity.
The cost is £0, just pay postage ..... and if you order a free sample with an order for other media or foams you won't even pay extra postage but you'll get some extra media for free. It's a win-win if you were going to buy something from the website ...... and you'll get some extra media.
Limited to 1 sample per person - you can order more (since I don't know how to limit the amount on the website) but only 1 sample will be sent out per order.

This offer of free samples comes in response to several unfortunate sellout (ambassador) clowns online saying that Biohome is nothing special ..... even though they've never used it, never held it (you can tell how good it is just by feeling it if you've got any idea about filtration) and never looked at it under a microscope (which is the most important way to view it).
If you want to see different media types under a microscope (at a sensible magnification) check out my video titled 'Looking inside filter media' on YouTube since that is very important. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTtAU...

....and if you've got a reasonably successful YouTube channel and want a larger amount of media to test in your system get in touch and I will send it out for your independent testing and reporting with no interference from myself.

Basically as long as you have a suitable amount of media and make sure that you're not using damaging water conditioners which detoxify / bind / remove ammonia, nitrite and nitrate (since it will starve bacteria and maintain an artificially low population) you will have perfect water (0,0,0).

If you use a damaging water conditioner then the choice of filter media is largely irrelevant since the beneficial population will be so small that nitrate will always be high and you will never achieve a full cycle (reduction in nitrate). Ammonia and Nitrite is very easy to control with minimal bacteria population but to get the full cycle completed (reduction in Nitrate) you have to let the beneficial bacteria population grow in line with the available food.
Locking up / binding that 'food' starves bacteria - it's a simple cause and effect but sadly there is a nation of (paid) influential 'ambassadors' online doing 80% water changes every week and using lots of unnecessary 'treatments' telling their viewers that to be normal - that is not normal.
*Look at your bottle of water conditioner - it will state if it messes with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate*
I always recommend API stress coat since it does not mess with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and when people switch from a damaging conditioner the full cycle completes (as long as they have plenty of suitable media for the tank and stock). If you want me to send you emails from people stating that fact get in touch - sales@filterpro.co.uk

Basically the further we get from Nature the more we will spend on unnecessary 'treatments' in a pharmaceutical business template (which requires lifetime customers to pay shareholders who want increased yearly profit) and that is unsustainable for many people keeping fish, especially with the increasing cost of electric.
Properly set up filtration is the antithesis to the pharmaceutical business model since it will prevent people spending stupid money every month (that's why I'm censored from most FBIbook pages and forums) - once you have a proper filter system set up and are not holding the bacteria back it will process the fish waste into perfect water with no problems.
A full cycle is a Natural process that sadly all too few people understand due to a critical lack of (censored) information.
It's basically a Terrain Theory vs Germ Theory argument which is most definitely (in this age of rampant censorship) a black belt conversation.
If you want me to make a video explaining the Terrain Theory vs Germ Theory argument let me know in the comments and I will do it , just don't expect it to get many views, lol - if you can comprehend the information in the possible future video you will not only save money but you will change your mode of thinking regarding aquarium 'treatments' and what you 'need' to add every water change. It's a deep issue which few are prepared to delve into since it's a proper 'rabbit hole' topic which will yield only the censored (fake) result if you search for 'terrain theory' on Google or Bing.

Anyway, sorry if I got well off track there but that's where being passionate about Nature and filtration takes you, lol

@Antonio-Montan

Hands down the most helpful YouTuber when it comes to Fish Keeping. Richard has provided me and probably hundreds if not thousands of others with his experience, time and advice. Nice guy and honest.

I went to Biohome and set my pumps up exactly like you suggest after discussing and researching a couple of years ago. After nearly killing my discus with a massive ammonia spike, and using Seachem Prime, I spoke to you who suggested water changing to get rid of the prime and trusting the media. I’ve not had an issue since, and last time I checked, both my tanks, both with FX6’s brimmed to the fullest with Biohome, are fully cycled and 0,0,0, at most 0,0,10. Thanks for the help!

@drewbacca5467

I was a follower of yours and ordered a bunch of Biohome. When I sought after advice on the forums, I ran into a lot of people who thought you were just a hocker of the product. Some, who have well-reguarded foam products, were down on pretty much all hard filter material, preferring the foam. Anyway, I was nervous but loaded up my OASE Biomaster Thermo 850 with the BioHome and did the modifications you suggested. As you mentioned, I didn’t see much of a difference for several months. Later, due to some family health issues I became a little lax on my water changes and didn’t do anything for 3-4 months. I felt terrible and went back to check my tank. I was shocked that my numbers were pretty good, better even than before I got the BioHome. I’m a believer and think it saved my fish from my negligence. I wouldn’t recommend being that hands off again, but think how nice the water will be now that I’m on task again.

Have used biohome in my tanks since day 1, water parameters are spot on and have never repeatedly done the massive water changes, absolutely no need, wake up people

@rewloirweok1

I've used biogravel in 3 of my tanks. It been doing its job for the last 4 years. I've brought the biomaster 850. Which I'm planning on buying more media from Richard. Dont let the haters win.

I use 10kg of the biohome plus in my efx 600 and a booster filter with only sponges before it. In a 350 litre tank (uk litre) ammonia nitrites and nitrates all 0. It's bloody good stuff 👍

@theboesmani

Would love to see video on Terrain vs Germ Theory . I have been using biome for several years and am very happy with it . Don't do huge water changes ( about 10% normally ) but I do use Prime Water Conditioner ( which I guess you don't approve of ) The water is then stored for a week or so before being used .

@TheGilbertFamilyonline

Initially gave my feedback over the phone to Richard earlier but decided to do a type up aswell regarding the Biohome ultimate filter media reducing the nitrate in both of my 200 litre tanks. I have two African Cichlid tanks with about 12 to 14 fish in each tank. My canister filters on each of the tanks is the all pond solutions efx + 2000l version with UV Steriliser. There are four trays in this version of the filters which currently both hold 3kg of Biohome Ultimate and I have a tray full of Biogravel in each aswell which was transferred from other filters. Plus the mechanical foams. Anyway I am writing this review because finally after 6 months I haven't had to do a massive 70 percent water change to keep the nitrate levels down in almost two weeks! I have only been topping off what has been lost through evaporation. For 6 months I had levels of around 50ppm to 60ppm every week! But now my readings are still only between 20ppm to 30ppm after two weeks of just top ups. So all is looking good for nitrate reduction with zero plants by the way as my fish would just destroy them as all cichlid owners will know. I will have to do a partial water change tho cos it will build back up eventually so will try a 30 percent water change and see how it goes. Conclusion is I believe the Biohome Ultimate Media is working for me and just happy to be not doing such big water changes every week now!

@S.Y-a-ok

I've been using Ultimate and the Biogravel for 5 or 6 years now. Once established, tank maintenance was reduced by at least 50%. More importantly I was getting less dead fish. Probably due to there being less fluctuations in the water chemistry. From personal experience, I would highly recommend 👌

@jennwren5504

Hi Richard, I have been using your biohome for sometime and recently everything has been out of wak but reading this I now think it must be because I am using seachem prime! I understand now that I was in a viscous cycle of ammonia spikes in one tank so I would do what the prime bottle says and add more to detoxify the ammonia and the problem just getting worse I’m guessing as I’m unwittingly starving my biohome livestock! Please make the extra video as it’s so easy to get lulled into giving these corporations money, we need facts 🙌 Thank

@Vangsgaard2

Filled my 23 litre external pump and filter benieth my Juvel VISION 450 with Biohome 6 years ago. This in accordance with Your specific advise for that specific filter. Nothing fancy. Some 100 to 120 individual fish shared between some 7 - 10 speices. Roots and plants. A planned layout from start, which over time has turned into a much more beautiful and natural looking, somewhat chaotic piece of nature. From about 6 months after introducing Biohome, I've only cleaned filter (lightly and gently) and replaced some 25% water about twice a year. A few fish have died, but from old age only. Water has been crystal clear. After a year and a half I stopped measuring with strips. A waste of time. Plants have thrieved, so that quarterly harvesting was nessesary, and the water has been crystal clear. I'm only sorry for You, Pond Guru, that your medium works so well. Still, after about 6 years, it does the job perfectly. So it will be a while, before it needs replacement. But when due, I'll know what to get. 👍

@82mrbob

On my water changes I always use aged water (3days) to off gas any chlorine. I've not used any form of chemical dechlorination for the last 5years. With a full natural cycle I confirm 0,0,0 ppm . My tanks also benefit from a plenum, to prevent water stagnation under the substrate at the bottom of the tank.

I've used biotope in my 250 litre tank for 5 years, I water change approximately 1 every 3 months. I clean my pre filter (just sponges) every 2 weeks. Tanganikan cyclids.
