WEEKEND AT FANTINE'S 13) The chase blazes on at an insane pace. Justine handles the truck like a skateboard on a half-pipe. At every turn, random fans pop out of nowhere to cheer her on. In the passenger seat, Fantine tries to rein in her friend’s recklessness, while a horrified Chloé curls up in the backseat, clutching a pillow. In the red SUV behind them, Heidi, Soozie, and Betty whip their heads to a deafening rock track. Betty plays a manic harmonica while Nikki and Shiva stare at her like she’s from another planet. SOOZIE: Step on it, Hyde! That cop car’s kissing our bumper! HEIDI: I’m in fifth, Sooz! Push more and the engine’s gonna blow! BETTY: Lifting weights is one thing. Hauling the whole gym in the trunk is another! HEIDI: And what now, Rosita? Toss everything out? Betty grins, eyes gleaming with madness. Heidi glares at the rearview like someone suggested tossing a baby out the window. Up ahead, Justine loses four cop cars by veering into an abandoned tunnel. Homeless folks cheer as they recognize her. JUSTINE: Sometimes being the Fighting Siren of Queens is such a drag… FANTINE: Less show, more plan, Juzz. Fantine climbs through the sunroof to check on Eldorado and Deville in the truck bed — both alert, fur on edge. JUSTINE: Want a plan, Coach? Let the hellhounds loose on the pigs! FANTINE: Zip it, Asphalt Diva. As they climb a hill, Soozie and Betty pop the trunk and start tossing dumbbells onto the road like pirate treasure. The weights bounce, ricochet, and send the police cars swerving, crashing, screeching to a halt. HEIDI: Not that one, B.B.! That’s titanium! Three grand! BETTY: Life’s heavy enough already, Hyde! Laughter. Safe in the tunnel, Justine relieves herself behind the S-10. Fantine tries to calm the dogs on the truck bed. JUSTINE: Finally! I was holding, like, 25 cans of Turbo in my bladder… CHLOÉ: I still don’t get it, Fanny. Why take the dogs to your house and not the mansion? FANTINE: Because I’d rather die than bring more chaos to— She’s interrupted by her phone vibrating. Fantine goes pale as she reads a message in all caps from Audrey: “WHY THE HECK ARE THE DOBERMANS IN A TRUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A POLICE CHASE ON TV?!” Fantine collapses to her knees in the truck bed. FANTINE: If we make it out alive, I swear I’m gonna make Hyde swallow Nikki and Shiva whole! CHLOÉ: Don’t be mad at Hyde… I told you, I’m not mad… FANTINE: Nobody touches my daughter, Chloé — not even a pretend one! But now what? Audrey’s totally gonna fire me! Justine steps in, serious for the first time. JUSTINE: Chill, Fantine. Fantine and Chloé exchange a surprised look. FANTINE: Did you just call me… by my name? JUSTINE: Look, before we were teammates on the court, we were ride-or-die. I’ve seen you go toe-to-toe with the worst — and more than once. She helps Fantine up and pulls open her green mermaid hoodie. Underneath: the old Lass-Kickers uniform from 2008. A tattoo gleams on her toned arm: a mermaid with the words FIGHTING SIREN. Chloé’s eyes go wide, genuinely starstruck. CHLOÉ: Whoa… JUSTINE: Brought another one in the glovebox, Coach Williams. In your size. FANTINE (a bit sheepish): I’m not the same anymore, Juzz. JUSTINE: And do you need to be, Coach? Let’s try piecing this mess back — together. The three head back into the cab… JUSTINE: And stop reminding me with those eyes how pretty I am, rookie. You’re lighting up the whole highway with that shine! Chloé hugs the pillow tighter in the back. CHLOÉ: Huh? No, no. I’m just hitching a ride. JUSTINE: And already throwing sass like a veteran. You’ll fit right in… Laughter. The night is just getting started.
