Beatles Bible

šŸ“… ON THIS DAY: Recording: Something (1969)

Studio One, Olympic Sound Studios, London
Producer: George Martin
Engineer: Glyn Johns

This was the first of four consecutive Beatles recording sessions at Olympic Sound Studios in Barnes, London, and saw work continue on George Harrison’s song ā€˜Something’.

This was for overdubs onto the backing track, which had been recorded on 2 May 1969. Harrison recorded a lead guitar part, and Paul McCartney re-recorded his bass guitar line.

It has been reported that Harrison later re-recorded his lead guitar part during the 15 August orchestral overdub session. However, a reduction mix known as take 37, made on 11 July 1969, contains Harrison’s solo. Since he did not record lead guitar for the song between 5 May and 16 July, it is most likely that the final solo was recorded during this session at Olympic.

The session lasted from 7.30pm to 4am the following morning. ā€˜Something’ was then left alone until 11 July, and work wasn’t concluded until 15 August.

One of George's best tunes and the very first one I ever heard from him ever when I was little.ā¤ļøšŸŽ¶

I love that song. The first George Harrison song where he wrote it for his first wife Pattie Boyd. To me in my opinion it's like a slow-dance song. Something is also one of my favorite songs from Abbey Road.

As a kid in the 60’s I was quite aware of the phases of Beatles music and their elevation through every album they put out. It still hurts knowing that every step they took in ā€˜69 would actually be near their end of their creative peak together. Just tears my heart out every time. Magic Lightening in a bottle. Up in the realms of where Classical Aficionados reside. That significantā¤

The Beatles were brilliant for bringing in Billy Preston. It was such a gloomy time and Billy was a lot of fun and talented.

Billy Preston, a gentleman. Met him in Fine Arts Palace Mexico City after the concert when he joined a Gospel Female choir ad libitum, so sweet and kind. 1975?

Have always appreciated that George didn’t put on a fake smile for photos, but chose instead to let his eyes do the talking.

When Michael Jackson, Sinatra and Elvis love your song, when your songs are, after all these decades, the top most streamed of the band, time proves George's worth and reivindicates the jewels he crafted. Nothing after the band could compare to ATMP and the Concert for Bangladesh. Blue Jay Way, the greatest song they ever published.
