Hey guys! If you haven’t watched our latest My Retro Life episode, now’s the time! It’s titled "Dad Said No to Donkey Kong on Game Boy (But I Fought for It)" and just went live this past Sunday! Watch Here - https://youtu.be/2HoqjNlWog4
It’s a story straight from 1994… when I desperately wanted Donkey Kong for Game Boy, but Dad didn’t quite see the value in it (at first!). If you’ve ever had to convince your parents to get you a game, you’ll definitely relate.
And check out this image from our home movies — Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman! Kind of a forgotten gem, don’t you think?
For a long time, the Super Game Boy was the only way we played Game Boy games in our house. We had traded in our original Game Boy for a Game Gear, and it wasn’t until we got the Super Game Boy in 1994 that we dove back into handheld gaming — but on the TV! Games like Wario Blast were ones I never played portably, only through that magical SNES add-on.
Wario Blast is a fascinating crossover — a collaboration between Nintendo and Hudson Soft, combining Wario and Bomberman into one wild little package. And yet... Bomberman never made it into Smash Bros. despite this being an official crossover. 🤯 That’s always felt like a missed opportunity to me.
Have you ever played Wario Blast? Or did you also only experience Game Boy games through Super Game Boy?
Let me know in the comments — and definitely go watch the new episode if you haven’t already!
