I don't consider Vienna or Lepanto to be crusades because they are defensive actions, not taking back territory lost to Muslims.

In Varna Poland lost his king Vladislav , definitely too young, as well as too much cocky, what lead him to disaster. In Vienna, John the III, was however glorious and victorious in face of the same enemy. With this battle the end of Turkish empire has begun.

“Defensive” campaigns in the Balkans can still be classified as Crusades if they were declared to be so by the pope and they were associated with the giving of indulgences or other spiritual rewards.

I always viewed the siege of Malta and the battle of against the ottoman navy as the last true crusade. It involved one of last remaining crusading orders, was a unifying event for Europe in which the majority of the kingdoms took part, killed the last real sense of ottoman invincibility, had famous figures that were legendary in their age, etc. it also ties a nice bow as afterwards the world became more “modern” with the concepts of chivalry and such dying out afterwards.

I like to think the Spanish Civil War was the latest crusade of Spain.

The Battle of Vienna marked the beginning of the demise of the ottoman horde. A couple of years later, Prince Eugene of Savoy dealt heavy blows to ottoman existence in two remarkable battles, the Battle of Zenta (1697) and the Battle of Petrovaradin (1716). These battles were literally nails in the coffin.

If not Vienna, probably the siege of Malta. And, in this light, certainly there was divine intervention
