I think it’s time we got a translation of the original octopus/jellyfish-like description from the novel.

I prefer the Wellsian types myself but I'll have to go with the '53 type here.

I wish we could have a mix of the two, the 2005 one looks too "Grey" and not at all threatening while the older design doesn't properly implement the cyborg-esque design and isn't humanoid enough. Something that combines the lanky limbs and "higher than though" posture and pose of the 2005 aliens with more surreal and unsettling "cyborg alien" aspects to make them more physically imposing and threatening would help make them seem like a genuine threat outside of the Tripod. Then again I wish the 2005 version didn't show the aliens at all, and the most we got to see was the arm at the end to make them more mysterious and scary.

Going with the Spielberg version on this, the Pal Martians are a good design, if a bit too cute imo (in the scene where one sneaks up on Forester and Silvia anyway, their inital blink-and-you'll miss it reveal was terrifying.)

Ngl. First time I saw the original design, I laughed. Also, Hey Benny. Long time no see. :)

The old one was really good for its time and I'm sure more than a few folks in 1953 were spooked in the theater. But the 2004 aliens look like they're actually alive and evolved somewhere.

The Martian from the 1953 WOTW used to frighten me as a kid

Option 2 would have it in the bag, but the RGB eye cluster brings it down.

The 50s one. The thought that went into how they 'see' was an intelligent and unique one. The modern take is pretty generic.

I cannot tell you how much I hate the Dakota Fanning scream movie

I think Option 1's head is a) generally too big for its body, but also b) too derivative of other notable movie aliens (the Independence Day alien comes directly to mind). However, I do think Option 1 was animated exceptionally well, something Option 2 could never match.
