hazards and catastrophes

Hello everyone! On March 26, 1945, the Battle of Iwo Jima officially ended with American forces securing the island after a grueling and costly battle. Why was the Battle of Iwo Jima important to the United States during World War II?

Also keep in mind that the americans thought that iwo jima was able to both provide early radar warning for us B29 raids heading to the home islands, and japanese fighters that could scramble to intercept the Us bombers. What the americans didn't know is that by February 1945 almost all the japanese fighters based on Iwo had been moved elsewhere, and that early warning for incoming us bombing raids could still be provided by Chi chi Jima and other smaller islands still in japanese control.

The answer you give is wrong due to the strategic base to bomb Japan was the Marianas Islands of Saipan,Tinian and Guam. It was the first Japanese territory taken, you really can't count islands taken during World War 1! Iwo Jima was used as an emergency field for shot up bombers and a fighter plane escort base! Please learn your history!

That's correct. They needed a staging area for poker games and a way to smuggle corn into areas where corn was eaten the long way 🌽
