Echo Bizarre

10,000 subs! I'm so grateful to everyone who's followed me so far, and I hope you'll stick with me moving forward as I get more ambitious and try new things and get bigger and bigger until one day in a feat of Icarusian hubris I flame out spectacularly and then am forgotten except for maybe a "The Fall of Echo Bizarre" video from some disgruntled former fan.

As I teased at the end of my Kingdom Hearts video, my next major project is an in-depth Deus Ex narrative analysis (I swear I committed to this before the remaster was announced). Hope you're excited for a close reading of the UNATCO Handbook. I have no idea how long it will end up being or how long it will take, but since I just hit this milestone I think I'll be throwing together a quick and easy celebration video that'll be a "Revival CRPG Story Tierlist" some time this week. Hopefully that will be fun and not screw up how the algorithm treats my videos too much. Also I've clipped out a bunch of moments from my previous videos that I'll be gradually uploading as shorts over the next month and change, so if you'd be interested in those keep an eye out (and also feel free to recommend your favorite short moments for me to add). I think if possible I'll avoid sending subscriber notifications for these shorts so you aren't spammed by clips of stuff you've probably already seen and only get them for my full videos, so feel free to check in every now and then manually to see if there's one that interests you.

Anyway, huge thanks once again and I hope you like what I've got planned.

Deus Ex analyses are such a treat. There's so much one could say about the narrative and world alone, way beyond what more general "retrospectives" can focus on. I'm still amazed by all the tiny details of characterisation hidden in plain sight, to be witnessed only by attentive and meticulous players – in a way, it mirrors real life, where we rarely get to see the full facts of a situation without seeking them out in the first place. It lends itself to player speculation, encouraging you to put the pieces together and fill in the blanks yourself, and in turn leading you to engage with these secondary stories in a personal way. They never beg for your sympathy, but merely ask you to consider them soberly, if at all. Gunther Hermann, a character that appears so blatantly monstrous and simple, the perfect stereotype of a killing machine, can also be humanised into a sympathetic, deeply tragic figure, but only if the player is willing to notice. And the fact that it’s never stated explicitly, only suggested in very sober terms, makes it incredibly compelling. Hell, even stone-cold JC himself undergoes a subtle development that parallels the player’s own progression, as their shared understanding of the game world and its themes is expanded and conflicting views are laid out before them. JC’s character goes a lot deeper than what is immediately apparent (and this is, indeed, a hill I am willing to die on), but without active player investigation it can be easily missed entirely. I’m a newcomer to your channel but I quite enjoy your style, your diction and cadence are clear and pleasant. And, of course, your arguments are solid. Deus Ex is quite obviously a favourite of mine, so this sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
