THE WARRIOR MERMAID’S NEW HEIGHTS 48 – TEN GIRLS, ONE TEAM Spring 2008. Justine almost had a heart attack when she saw Jezzie back on the court after more than six months. The police had finally done something about Hogan’s Alley, which had been pure chaos because of gang wars. To keep people safe, everyone had to follow a pretty annoying curfew until things calmed down. After a strong hug on the court of Jeff Hyman High, the two friends went for a ride around Queens. Juzz on her skateboard, and Jezzie, always in her black cape, hands buried deep in the pockets of her ripped black jeans. “So, what do you think of my new tattoo, Jezzie? I decided to embrace the nickname ‘Mermaid.’ Mermaid is like, pretty and strong, right? Totally me! Haha, Betty can roast me all she wants! And hey, I kept training hard while you were gone, Hyde and Soozie even got scared of me. Remember that big girl who messed with Fantine during a game and I flipped her upside down like a ragdoll? I did the same thing to Hyde the other day, can you believe it? I felt every bone crack! Check out this vein!” The goth girl only muttered a few “hm-hm” and “uh-huh” here and there. Justine kept going: “That fight you picked with Fantine last year? People still talk about it. She, Jenny and Cindy aren’t the only ones calling plays anymore. Now, everybody gives input. Result: twelve games without losing, crushing everyone! Even Jenny’s been playing calmer on offense, all because of your fight. And you didn’t even say a word!” Juzz managed to make her friend crack a smile — rare thing. “So... are you thinking of playing for the Lass-Kickers again someday?” The girl from Juárez just looked down, quiet. It wasn’t the time to answer. Sixteen years later... “Ladies, be honest... Did I go too far protecting Jenny back then? Did that bother anyone besides Jezzie?” The silence that fell over Sister Maria’s living room after Fantine’s question was so heavy it could be felt in the air. Even the dust seemed to have a sound of its own. Jenny lowered her head, while Justine clenched her hands so tightly she left marks on her palms. Cindy pulled her hood down, almost hiding her entire face. Outside, a police helicopter hovered above, waiting anxiously, as if it too wanted an answer. At that moment, keeping Jezebel’s followers away from Sister Maria’s guests seemed like the last thing the cops up there cared about. “Well, uh...” Jenny spoke softly. “We’ve always treated each other that way, haven’t we, Captain? You always wanted to be almost like a mom to me since we were girls. I think you got a little lost in the role...” “Let me simplify.” Cindy lifted her hood just a bit. “Remember how the crowd would BARELY cheer when Jennifer scored? Remember the whole school chanting ‘Hey, Cinderella?’ when I was on the bench? That wasn’t to pamper me, it was to try to open your eyes!” “Well, Coach.” Justine took off her cap, a little embarrassed. “Don’t get me wrong, you’re the person I respect most in the world, we’ve been through so much together, but... Your favoritism then was obvious! I can’t even count how many times I missed chances to score because you told me to pass the ball to Jenny for no reason! I was literally hanging from the rim by my nose!” The founder of the Lass-Kickers felt her hands go cold. “But... why didn’t anyone tell me? We were only fifteen, we were still learning to lead a team! I mean, we won so many games that I thought everything was fine! It was my first big project in life, I was so afraid of failing!” “Because we loved having you as our leader!” Betty adjusted her bangs, trying to find the right words. “Nobody wanted to lose their spot on the team for calling you out. Remember the old coach? That idiot always benched us for nothing, treated players like rocks!” “Heidi? Susan? You’re not saying anything?” “Vuilnis... Honestly, Sooz and I were the ones who suffered the least from your schemes.” “It’s true, Fantine. We only played to make sure nobody messed with you guys!” “The team played almost two years only on counter-attack,” Justine jumped back in. “You barely used the bench, you didn’t like big blowout scores, of course someone was gonna get annoyed with that!” “Oh, but then,” Jenny wrapped her arm around her friend’s shoulder, “you fought with Jezzie. The girl couldn’t say what she felt, so she just went straight to aggression. The only way she knew how...” “Don’t remind me... After I broke her nose, I realized I had to change, right?” Fantine gave a smile. “Everyone started pitching in with tactics, and the bench finally got their chance...” “Remember when Fantine put Judy and Sheena in our spots, Mermaid? The crowd almost tore the gym apart!” Betty recalled. “And that’s how we got 24 straight wins in the 2007/2008 season, Coach Williams!” Justine hugged her coach with that trademark smile. “Because of your leadership and everyone’s ideas!” “None of us would’ve come this far without you, Captain!” Cindy pulled her hood down. “You never let me play a full game, but I was happy to help build the Lass-Kickers. It wasn’t easy, but we loved every second of it!” “Yeah, I think even Jezzie enjoyed being part of the team,” Justine said. “When I visited her in prison here in New York, her eyes lit up whenever we remembered the times she played.” “Ooooh, where’s my hug, ladies?” Despite the constant darkness paving Sister Maria’s path, the hostess couldn’t help but feel warmth in her chest at that display of affection. Even Jezebel herself, locked in her cell hundreds of miles from New York, didn’t know why — but she felt an impulse to smile. “Muy bien, señoritas, muy bien!” The young nun clapped her hands and made the sign of the cross. “It is never too late to admit mistakes and correct them. Amen!” “Amen, Sister Maria!” Jenny regained her composure, remembering the reason they had come. “Speaking of mistakes, uh... When Jezzie drew that map on our championship photo... Along with your address, we found this.” She showed Jezebel’s sister the keychain with the Kabuki mask sketch in red ink, the word FOLLOW written as if the letters were bleeding. Maria Valentina’s eyes widened, a chill running down her spine. Her gentle expression turned tense in an instant, and she covered her face with the Noh mask. “Come with me...”
