Lesley the Bird Nerd

Sweet Blue likes to decorate his face with tamarack needles, while his mate Chloe prefers to floof out her belly feathers, making it look as though she is wearing a dress. Both are cute, but I think Chloe looks ready for a ball. 😅 Did you know Blue Jays fluff up their feathers not only to trap warm air, but also when they’re feeling relaxed or comfortable?

In this picture, Chloe is all fluffed up ---her way of showing she feels safe around me… and also her way of saying, ‘Yes, I’d love a peanut or almond, please.’ 💙🐦 Which, of course, I’m more than happy to oblige.

Were roasting this month's batch of hazelnuts right now. The scrub jay pair that hang out on my roof, expect them. They will rap at my door. They will peck the roof of my RV. I find twigs and random tokens they leave me. They sure love hazelnuts 😂

YES Leslie! Absolutely true! *Birds "sleek" their feathed coat like an overlapping layer of scales..creating a "coat of armor" in a sense.. Imagine long, multilayered "shingles" that are "slippery" from side to side, top ones can be shed, and the layers of dense "shafts & plate" below still offer protection..like a flexible barrier.. Unlike a fur coat, which allows penetration, imagine a bundle of sticks, tightly wrapped in a roll of sections of slippery plastic tarp.. compacted..the inside being "structural" like that barrier of a tight bundle of sticks that can't be easily penetrated & the outside like "nonstick-teflon" that "gives" like a loose skin, or sheds.. *This defense allows birds a "greased pig" quality..AND lightweight "armor" such as Samauri made (much like a thatched roof) 😄 Birds are so cool.. they have so many unique tactics & physical attributes to solve so many problems

Such lovely downy feathers, beautiful Chloe, and you have regal poise too 👑🦋💕 Sadly, there are no Bluejays in Ireland. I have a feeling that this Bluejay couple are being very well cared for and that is why they are in the best health. Thank you for all that you do, Lesley

Had no idea about relaxing fluff. I know ours like sunflower seeds, shelled and unshelled. I'll put out more peanuts. A lot of our birds eat what our squirrels drop when they eat nuts.
