I think Rory let his class anger keep him from seeing the whole picture.

Brilliant response. Rory cannot escape his class prejudice. This is a long road but one that has to be taken. Well done Gary. Keep up the fight!

That episode really put me off Rory. Haven't watched it since. I was a single mum in the Thatcherite era and struggled to get my degree and a reasonable standard of living. Now, my 38 year old son has a steady job, and an ok wage, but will never afford to buy a house. The rich & privileged don't have a clue about real life. Stay sane Gary, it's a constant battle, and we need you, and Barry's Economics too. ❤❤❤

You got that degree and didn’t forget your fellow humans. Thank you Gary.

As an Irish listener of The Rest is Politics, I particularly enjoyed Rory's passive aggressive takes on Irish republicans vis a vis The Good Friday Agreement and also had a chuckle about his ideas on Brexit ie the Irish government was a bad faith actor seeking to scupper Brexit and worries about the peace process were just a bit of a ruse.... Rory Stewart is a Tory. Always was always will be. People who don't speak with the right accent aren't to be trusted, be they Irish or working class Londoners. Good on you for nailing him Gary.

It's crazy when the working class talks about wages, we're told to take fewer vacations, live within our means... But when we talk about taxing the wealthy, it's always, "They provide capital and take all the risks," and it's never, "they should buy fewer cars and yachts and live within their means." Also, they take the risk of what... Becoming working class? It's a joke. Any multi-millionaires/billionaires not trying to help their societies should not be allowed to live in them.

The fact Rory criticised you of class anger and yet can’t even acknowledge your achievements clearly based on your working class background is so tone deaf from Rory. Keep up the good work Gary. Your intelligence and background allowing you to see what working class people like my self are dealing with while moving within elite space is refreshing and great

The people are 100% with you Gary. It is important you set the record straight.

He failed as a politician, in his mind, because he was slightly too noble, slightly too clever, slightly too incorruptible to get on.

I almost couldn’t believe my ears when I heard Rory say that about you on the interview. The disdain that he had for yourself and Yanis exposes his class anger, that he and people like him are shaken by the thought of radical economics coming for their hoarded wealth.

Wow the audacity of privileged elite never ceases to amaze! Well done Gary for setting the story straight. So proud of you and your work. ❤

When they can’t attack the message, they attack the messenger. And yep they will always attack our status as lesser than “our betters” I personally can not comprehend how many people, who work for a living, are willing to defend the wealth of those who get rich off people who work for a living..

What's even more crazy is you went back to University to better yourself after you made your money. That alone shows integrity, you did not have to

You have the establishment rattled Gary. Thank you for all that you are doing to raise awareness of inequality and the speed with which it has grown since Covid. Tax wealth not work.

You’re a legend Gary. I unsubscribed from TRIP after that episode. I was so angry. You have more manners, class, intelligence and integrity than the lot of them put together 🙏

Garys Economics
In a recent episode of The Rest Is Politics, the well known podcaster and former politican Rory Stewart described me as a "pseudoeconomist", on the alleged and incorrect basis of me not having any post-graduate degrees.
I do, in fact, have a two-year Economics Masters degree from Rory Stewart's own Alma Mater, Oxford University.
In all honesty, this was a sad moment for me. I have enjoyed Rory's work for quite some time, and hoped him to be a well-researched and honest man. It has been disappointing to find that that is not always true. As someone who himself received a professorship at Harvard, seemingly without any postgraduate degrees, on the basis of his achievements in his professional career, I would also have hoped that Rory could have understood that achievements in the workplace can often be as educational, if not more educational, than achievements within academia.
I hope that this was merely a case of a rare mistake of bad researching, and I expect Rory Stewart to do the honest thing - publicly own up to his mistake and correct the record.
The life of a high-achieving working class person in elite spaces is to be constantly accused of not having really done the things which you have done. This has happened to me so many times in my life, that I have come to expect it from polite British society.
But I did not expect it from Rory Stewart.
Be better Rory. Apologise and correct the record publicly.
I'll be waiting.
