National Basketball Association is the NBA, but I think you knew that and yes it is true. Americans have not jumped on the soccer band wagon yet. Even after a gold medal, or was it a world cup, by the woman's team? Football in America dates to about the late 1800's. Baseball started earlier though, which was a tough kind of Cricket. Baseball is an amazing sport at the professional level with all the tension a spectator could want. It can drive one crazy too! US Football is almost much more like UK Rugby. But Very American. This sport started at the college level and then went pro with the Bears in I think around 1920-1930. The father of the league was Papa Bear Hallas who couched Chicago until about the early 1970's. (I know! Is that love of the game or what?) Then came Couch Ditka, Mike Ditka, look him up in Wikipedia. The guy played for papa bear and when they lose a close game he would bash his head against the lockers in the locker room! With all that kind of excitement going for it American Football is miles ahead of MLS. Americans look at the game and it just looks too boring!
