Depends on their usage. If there's a few references you would think "Oh that's cool!", but if they are used too much you would think "Eh it's alright."

I think Leitmotifs should be explored and utilised by anyone trying to set up any kind of cohesive link between pieces of music. They can be used in a variety of ways to create a great deal of narrative complexity between certain events or characters, and they can also be used to drum up hype in climactic moments if the motif is particularly memorable. Toby Fox is obvious amazing at this, but honestly I think more people should strive to emulate that kind of design rather than mocking those who attempt it, and something tells me Toby would probably want that as well. That said, there is such a thing as overusing them. Ideally, you'd never want a song to feel like it's just a remix of a pre-existing piece of music, unless of course that's the whole point. Music needs to feel unique enough that the inclusion of a motif isn't the only memorable part.

Leitmotifs are “context”, it shows relation to other characters through song Golden vengeance made sense because of the people present No time to live for CC, been so long for puppet, plus a few others It’s why Deltarune has the freedom motif, those characters are all related through freedom

Just needs to be important to the moment for the refrence to work. If its just a jingle to be a jingle idk. Toby uses them to call back to emotions of the scene not just as easter eggs

For me, I prefer when songs hold back on them, it's what makes golden vengeance kinda weak for me (I still like it, it just feels TOO leitmotif-reliant). But as a composer, I will say that using leitmotifs/"references" is pretty fun!

Fr, jotaros theme was hype, but if you spam references to motifs outside of your own it gets tiring.

I like them but not too much. Golden vengeance is the exemple : too much leitmotif.

It truly depends on their uses. For example, Inside The Shell was the first song of Vs Fnaf that hit us with that good "fanservice" moment, and it hit like a TRUCK, completely selling the rest of the mod as an awesome adventure with Freddy and the Gang. However, PIRATES CURSE'S lemotifs completely overstay their welcome. I understand GV being chocked full of references, as it's the end of a story. Pirates Curse is just the end of the W week. It's not a full story. So, the lemotifs aren't really that impactful in comparison, and it leaves the song feeling (no offence to you, you had to lock in on VS FNAF 2) a bit lazy. However, the Let Me Through reference still gives me chills.
