Thanks to your timely post, I sent my dad instead of my 9yo son to go with our teens. It would've been too intense for him. They ALL loved the movie! They are Tolkein and anime fans. Thank you for your review.

Bishop Barton’s movie reviews were one of the first intros I had to Catholic thought and perspective. I know his content has developed but I do miss them. Point is… I’m glad you’ll be doing these!! Also.. thank you for all your other work for Mother Mary. As a Protestant convert my relationship with her has been.. weird. Slowly grow to love and depend on her.. thanks to you. So, you have my gratitude and prayers on multiple levels.

Thank you for the movie reviews! Great to know it’s woke free! Worst thing is finding out if a movie is woke half way through watching it at the cinema, a family member told me they had to walk out the other day (different movie)! God bless!

This is what I love about movies. I didn’t personally find the film all that interesting. I didn’t think it was particularly well written and thought the characters were rather bland. But you found it to be inspiring and edifying, and that is awesome! I’m all for extracting the good, true, and beautiful out of all stories, so if someone can see it where I don’t, I’m just glad the film had some positive impact.

I was laughing throughout the whole movie. It isn’t comedic, it’s just THAT laughably bad. It’s completely Mary Sue and girl boss, she literally states that she “never wants to marry a man” and the men in the movie do LITERALLY NOTHING except make stupid decisions. Love your channel Gabe but have to wholeheartedly disagree on this one!

Bro I thought it was terrible. Marry sue + could have taken place not in middle earth and I wouldn’t be comparing it to Tolkien the entire time…

All I know is that during that scene with one of the brothers making a last stand with his bow before being captured, Legolas would have lined those guys out.

I will give this a try, but I'm having some doubts. It's getting some negative reviews.

Good art + music + voice acting, I honestly think the no 1 problem in my eyes is that this movie isn’t even that bad… I just keep comparing it to Tolkien and it falls very short. Not Good. Not Bad.

Glad to hear. And thanks Gabi, you're one of the reasons I've become a recent Catholic catechumen. I've been chronically ill since 2020 and 23 years and understanding and turning to Christianity has helped me deal with it. And then getting over the notion that Catholics were worshipping Mary and the saints as other God's and understanding more things like Peter and rock and the Eucharistic has led me to Catholicsm. You and Matt Fradd and Bishop Barron have been big influences :) Also I've always loved lord of the rings and so has my dad even though he's very anti religious as he thinks it leads to war and such. Both the books and movies. I think they have a lot of those moral foundations thanks to Tolkien. And Dad is just a bit too un- nuanced and deceived.

Huhuhu I’m going to watch it. I’m normally careful with movies that look like this one because of sexual content. Anime is not safe anymore. But now that you recommend it, I feel safe 🥳 so thank you 🙏🏻 God bless you and your famil

The War of the Rohirrim is my best movie for 2024. This movie is GLORIOUS. It is animated, it has A LOT OF VIOLENCE, but interestingly enough that’s one of the reasons it is so great. Important people die. I wouldn’t recommend it for little ones, but 13+ it’s a MUST see. Young people especially have been flooded with comic book style movies where nobody dies and nothing has consequences… This is different.
Tolkien fans should be proud. It isn’t 100% faithful to the source material (no movie is) but all the source material was covered, done justice, and it wasn’t polluted by Hollywood. There has been practically zero advertising for this… so I hope you see it. I believe it couldn’t have been pulled off financially if this wasn’t animation. You don’t need to be a LOTR super fan to enjoy this, but any causal viewer of the trilogy will love this.
I want to reiterate I wouldn’t take my 7 year old daughter to see this… it is animated, but it is a war movie (literally in the title). Way more violence than the LOTR trilogy. That being said I do plan on taking my 12 year old daughter. One of the leading characters is a woman and she isn’t an insufferable Girl Boss, but she is good and noble. She isn’t in the source material, but we see everything through her eyes and I think the material is served by this perspective.
Josef was literally clapping when it finished. Seriously.
Josef (16): ““Dang, that was impressive…” “Dad, you know it’s good when you are writing the script for the post before it finishes.”
"The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep... one last time."

(Video review coming soon. Yes... I am going to be consistently reviewing movies that might appeal to families so you know what to expect from a Catholic perspective. Check the shorts section of our page.)
