Theres no rules in art, just guidelines (the fundamentals) You dont have to have am expert grasp at amy of these fundamentals to "break" them. You need to understand just enough to know how to twist em to your needs. And usually, that twist is picked up from studying other art you admire. If youre choosing to be an indie artist, its actually better to choose 1-3 fundamentals to have as close to mastery as you can get (for me, this is color, light and anatomy) and then get the rest to a level to support your main ones. This allows you to stand out a little easier in the sea of fellow indies. Should you desire to go into industry, you will be forced to have a very solid understanding of all fundamentals so thst you can apply them more flexibly, since industry will require you to be able to work in any style they give you.

In my opinion, I think you should. It's hard to make something if you're not aware of the parts that go into it. Learning the "rules" gives you more control over what you want to express. I understand that not everyone wants to spend a billion years formally learning art, but it's something that you can just take 10 minutes out of your day to do, and you don't have to do specific studies. Just try incorporating what you've learned into the art that you love making!

"Bending" is more accurate for me than "Breaking" since we all breaking fundamental at some point. "Yes" If you really want to make a living from Art Industry. In fact, nearly every process that includes variation always have room to bend some conventional rules, you can even expand this logic to fantasy world. Art style also comes from bending one or multiple fundamentals. "No" if you just want to draw for the sake of creating.

It depends on if you're trying to be a hobbyist or professional. I think hobbyists only need surface level knowledge of the fundamentals.

The thing about art is you don’t HAVE to. With any creative process it’s up the person creating them.

I won’t say there are “rules” to art, but there are things to remember if you wanna draw something “intentionally” cus there isn’t like a list of rules where if you break, it’s not called art anymore. But also if you wanna draw in a specific way, you gotta follow fundamentals

Yes! It can be tough or boring to learn the fundamentals but it's rewarding in the long run!

You only start to understand why the rules exist and what they actually mean once you start breaking them. So.... you can never really know them first. We as humans learn from failures, not successes.

My answer is sort of yes, but honestly as someone who is a hardcore fundamental grinder...I don't think you should know the rules BEFORE breaking them. You should honestly break them anytime you learn something new. For example if you learn a simple Loomis head..instantly apply it to anime style if that's what you want...if you learn perspective or cubes...instantly apply it to a body drawing for example...like..I REALLY disagree with those artists who says you have to draw realistic first before stylizing as that's been COMPLETE bullshit in my experience. But yea...you should let loose and break rules even if you don't know yet...it's important to have fun and there will always be rules you're not aware of...but do break the ones you understand and learn

If it looks good, it looks good, that's the only real rule IMO. Of course if you keep "breaking" a rule you don't understand and it impedes your art from reaching it's full potential, then yes, I would agree.

You wouldn't build a house without foundation or support? This was said to me years ago about rules in regards to art. It is there as a structure for the artist. I'm all for creative freedom and expression, however the novice should not skip these vital steps of the art journey. I've been sketching for 20 years, and the amount of bite back to rules in art is concerning. Especially when it comes to the aspect of visual storytelling and equating drawing skills to knowledge of art. Both go in resonance with each other, eventually regarding skill and knowledge. Even at my age and skill, a quick refresh on rules and warm-up skills can improve a piece greatly. Rules matter, and once you understand them, then bend and shape them to your needs.

"Should you know the rules before breaking them?" Not according to YouTube

You should at the very least know the fundamentals before you start twisting them to fit your style. In my opinion you don’t need a full art education or complete grasp of realism and such, however being able to know what goes into drawing realism is important.

Before you try chromatic mode, learn about keys and scales. Unless you know what you're doing, that would just lead to your music sounding off-tune. Illustration is the same way.

You should break the rules unintentionally but look at the results honestly. When you are a beginner you will be breaking rules all the time because there are so many rules to know. So break them feel something is wrong, then look up the rule for how to make it better. Having to know everything ahead of time can paralyze you into never making anything at all.
