thank you for posting about this. i’m also a hiker with arthritis and am growing to accept my limitations while also relishing the times that i can get. the trip may be shorter than it once was, but the peace and joy are still there!

I’m just going to send you a big hug and you will feel better in a little bit. I’ve a ton of body troubles and I’m 52! The way I see it is that my body is some indestructible beater of a car that just won’t stop running even tho it’s starting to be pretty beat up. Knees shoulder spine compression neck issues… whatever. Just rest up eat some healthy food and you will be ok soon enough. You will still be able to get out. A cane is just a trekking pole with another name!☺️

I’m so sorry this is a struggle you’re forced to deal with, but thank you for sharing your reality with us. I hope the cane brings you relief on those monster work days!

Have you tried a MAT practitioner? (Muscle Activation Technique) I had spinal surgery in December of 2022 and hip repair surgery in June. I don’t know what I would have done without my MAT therapist! I was told I wouldn’t be able to hike for at least 9 months to a year but I was out hiking in September- 3 months after the hip surgery! I also have degenerative arthritis of the spine and it has helped tremendously with that as well!

Wandering Switchback
Having some of the feels.
Leveling up on my disability journey- I just purchased my first cane. I experience flare ups of my arthritis every so often, and this one has been horrendous (super fun while working five 12-hour days in a row in an emergency department). Arthritis has been a part of my life for going on 20 years (thanks, Navy!), but man, getting older (I say this as I’m about to turn 44) can be rough sometimes.
I’m grateful for tools that can help me through the rough times, and even more grateful for the good days that get me out on the trail.
