Have you ever been stuck on a plane on the tarmac for over an hour?

Several times at Dallas Fort Worth when thunderstorms caused a total ground stop just after we landed. I’m now convinced that the airport code DFW actually stands for “Delayed For Weather!”

More than once. The last time was UAL #61 MEL > SFO in June 2024. The plane backed away from the gate and then there we sat. Evidently some repair need was discovered, and they sent for the technicians to do it, but they took too long to get there and get it fixed so the flight crew timed out. We thus had to deplane, but because we were on a US-based plane and thus technically on US soil, we had to go through Aussie immigration to get back into the airport. They had to arrange an impromptu passport and customs setup at the gate, which took a while. Sat on the plane for over 4 hours, during which I caught a stellar case of Covid which laid me up for weeks when I got home. Not a fun memory.

Yes in San Jose with no aircon. They gave us a $100 voucher towards a future flight as compensation which turned out to be useless because it expired before I could return to America.

In 1996 at YVR! My family and I were stuck on the tarmac during the 1996 ‘Blizzard of the Century’. It was snowing so hard that after the aircraft was fully deiced we would immediately taxi for takeoff, but in that time we would need another deicing. The flight crew was great, kept us fully informed, and we eventually made it to Hawaii. YVR closed about 30 minutes after we got off the ground.

Many years ago, my plane was stuck on the tarmac in Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar) on my way from Kathmandu to Bangkok. I remember spending some time musing on the philosophical question of whether I could count Burma as a country I had visited, since I was suspended in the air in a metal tube, we never deplaned, and my feet never touched the ground.

I used to fly a few times a month. Domestic and international. And it is so rare, in my life, I think the total number is under 5 times. One time was 2 hours for a 2.5 hour flight while I was badly injured flying home with my little cousin who I took to visit family. Had a freak accident while there. Latest, I was in Singapore flying to LAX and we were on the tarmac for about an hour or more. I was traveling with my 95-year-old grandpa. Thankfully we were in business. We ended up being on the plane for 17ish hours from start to finish.

DFW, the weather went the way that wasn’t expected, several inches of rain on the runway and we came slogging back to the terminal while we still could. We got to leave after it quit strobe lightning and dumping water.

I don't remember which airport over 20 years ago in the U. S., but it was over 3 hours. The flight attendant told us to keep the blinds down so it would stay cooler. She finally received permission to walk up and down the isle with cups and bottles of water. At one point we were giving permission one at a time to use the toilet one at a time. No standing. It was awful. No compensation.

I have been stuck in the terminal before departure a few times. The longest on the tarmac was 30 minutes in Chicago. Arrivals had backed up and there was no gate for us.

Yep, LAX to Sydney, Continental Airlines, deverted to Honolulu fluid leaking from the engine, maintenance crew fixed the problem and we took off, they left us on the plane which I thought was strange.

Yep, and the pilot kept telling us it was "paperwork."

I learned to always do a ‘just in case’ toilet visit before getting on the plane - and when you think they might be coming close to putting the seatbelt lights on for landing!

Over three hours once at Frankfort. Heathrow declared a baggage handlers strike while I was in midair so we were diverted there. There were so many planes on the tarmac that it took that long for them to find a set of stairs to get us off.

The computers went down at Heathrow in May of 2023. We waited for more than 2 hours after landing to get a gate and get off the airplane since boarding and gate assignments were being done manually.

Yes. I was stuck on the tarmac in Chengdu, China for 4 hours. This caused me to miss my connection in London. The flight they put me on did not depart until the next day. As a result I missed my daughter’s high school graduation in Virginia. I arrived just after the graduation. I was so sad.

Waiting for de-icing solution at Spokane (Washington) International Airport. Didn't mind too much, as this is a major safety intervention in the winter! I guess they use two different kinds... The first kind had been applied and (oops!) there was none of the second kind at that part of the airport. It all worked out... 😊

I guess I'm lucky. I have been on well over 100 flights. I've been delayed on the tarmac about a dozen times for 1/2 hour at most.

In 2005 I as well as my family were stuck in the cabin for almost 3 hours after all were boarded and accounted for in Denver. Later, it was whispered that a group of Southern eastern men needed extra screening since they had few luggage checked in or some piece needed extra screening.
