I thought I'd heard Apple removed FireWire support from the OS a few years back? Kind of sad, really. FireWire was a fantastic technology and superior in every way to USB except for one, the cost of the chipset. You could have more than one host on a a FireWire "network" or FLAN. The protocol supported QOS to ensure smooth playback, which is what made FW popular for use with digital video in the early years. I was disappointed we never really saw FireWire evolve beyond FireWire 800 as there was the ability and a roadmap up to 3200 and I'm sure it could have gone further. Of course, with Thunderbolt 5, we have more speed and capability than FireWire would have been able to deliver most likely. I was fortunate enough to play a key role in the development of FireWire at Apple as Test Lead for versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the software support in MacOS. It was a fun project to work on, but also a volatile time to be working at Apple. 1.0 was released in the first half of 1997 and Steve Jobs returned to Apple in September of that year. And then began the stream of reorgs and layoffs. But that's a whole different story.

Ironically, I just got a request yesterday for a 30 tape transfer. I'll need FireWire 😂

So this “update” basically adds support for new iPhones pros that most FCPX users don’t own. I guess this is better than giving us the updates we’ve actually been asking for 🤷🏽

Kinda dirty how they not mention the FireWire support in the store updates and only in the separate release notes. Anyway you’re cooked already if you updated to Tahoe.

Final Cut Pro 11.2 is out! But if you are still using a FireWire cable to import footage from a camcorder, don’t update! Apple is discontinuing support for this feature!
