I had no idea what to expect with the music down scene here in Music City - Nashville, TN - but here is a snapshot of how it goes:
Generally 4 people sit up on the chairs on the stage and they do rounds - the person on the left (or right) will start, and he or she will perform an original song, then the next person, until all four have done one of their songs
Then they will do another round, everyone singing another song in turn. This can go on for up to an hour, typically, sometimes songwriters will get to do 4 of their tunes.
As I am just starting out, this is an open mic, after the writer's rounds have finished up. We typically get to do 1, 2, or 3 rounds. That night we were allowed to sing 2.
When you become more established, if you get noticed, the people that hold these events will start to invite you into their writer's rounds.
