“How Do I Grow My Business Online?” A Conversation between a Business Owner & a Friend (who is a full time marketer)
Characters: (Fictional) • Amy – Business Owner (frustrated, curious, trying) • Sam – Digital Marketer (relatable, calm, experienced)
Amy: Ugh. I’ve posted like five times this week and I just got 2 likes. How the heck do people actually grow their business online?
Sam: (smiling knowingly) Let me guess💭… you posted on Instagram, added a few hashtags, and hoped for the best?
Amy: (sarcastic) Pretty much! I even threw in a motivational quote I read in a book and a selfie. That’s supposed to work, right? It can help me grow, right?
Sam: It can… but growing online takes more than posting. It’s strategy. It’s timing. It’s understanding what your customers are actually searching for.
Amy: So you’re saying my “Happy Monday, buy my product!” post wasn’t it?
Sam: (laughs) Not exactly. Think of your online presence like a storefront. Would you walk into a store that shouts random stuff at you, or one that actually solves your problem? I run away from such stores. 😂
Amy: Okay, fair. But I’m not a tech genius. Where do I even start?
Sam: Start simple. ✅ Fix your website — make it clear, fast, and mobile-friendly. If it has been touched for ages, it needs update. ✅ Set up your Google Business profile. Post regularly. ✅ Learn some basic SEO so people can find you when they search. ✅ And if you have a budget, run a Google Ad. Small. Targeted.
Amy: Sounds… manageable. But it feels like I’m doing so much, and nothing’s working.
Sam: (more serious tone) I get that. It’s frustrating. Some days you feel on top of the world, and some days… nothing. But growth online doesn’t happen overnight. It happens when you keep showing up with purpose.
Amy: And coffee. Definitely coffee.☕️
Sam: (laughs) Absolutely. Coffee. And consistency.
Amy: Alright. No more random posts. I’m going in with a plan. Locking in.
Sam: Now you’re talking. And hey — don’t forget to track what’s working. Growth is messy. But it’s real.
Amy: (grins) Messy growth. That should be the name of my next campaign. Lol 😂
Sam: And I’ll help you run it.
If you’ve ever felt like Amy, you’re not alone. Growing your business online takes work, but with the right mindset and plan, it’s more than possible. And people have done it, so can you.
