This is how it is: 19th century wars in their aftermath created economic rivalries, which would then also turn into military rivalries, leading to defense treaties being signed and great nationalism, and then led to an outsider to go mad and kill a royal, and hence pit the two big sides against each other, and drown the world in war.

I would say economic rivalries because tension between nations was a big cause. I don’t know how many secret treaties there were.
