I voted for narrator off screen. But there is always an exception. If the narrator is female...then I wouldn't mind seeing who's face is behind the voice. Just my honest opinion.

i am an audio listener of most true crime & other forms of long content 88% of the time. the only person whom i am accustomed to seeing on screen is mike from that chapter; he’s just a spunky dude with a life insurance jingle & them visuals never cease to spark a goofy smile despite the topics which are, ofc, heavy. other than that, i prefer audio & the only visuals being relevant pics of maybe locations, cctv footage, pics of people; not a crime scene photo person whatsoever though unless it is just a room or something with nothing graphic bc it just is too much for me. sometimes idek how i stomach these true stories, but ya visuals aren’t huge for me. there’s a channel that’s a man & woman that i listen to sporadically, i am not a very loyal yt consumer tbh, i hop from channel to channel & recently discovered they’re now talking into mics on camera & tbh i really dislike it lol. it’s their channel but i find looking at people talking straight faced into a mic is just… not enjoyable. there’s nothing it adds to it, just staring at me in dim light… nah.i listen to mike & a twitch lady named boze which is always on camera but she does live streams & reacts w her audience so diff ball game. just my honest opinion. most seem very tacky to me; tru red crime had switched to mostly him talking at us with the rainbow mic & i just was like uhhh i’d prefer the stock images… it’s just strange to me unless someone has the charisma to be an on screen presence, which he doesn’t for me; he’s not particularly funny or amusing, not that you need to be as it is heavy topics, i am completely fine w monotone storytelling, fits the content (unless someone is a mike type) but i think it’s easier to just not have to edit a bunch & just talk. coffee house crime is another where i just always feel strange as he is just talking & eh but i’ll listen. some people can pull it off like no shade; i am mostly indifferent & won’t pick apart the fact people do yk? but even the dude on law & crime, mr black, he only shows his avatar which is very exaggerated & the obvious deep voice he puts on for the show makes me cringe (esp after hearing how he really talks when he interviewed someone on cam); along with trying too hard to be like, edgy? like man, i rather just listen & be told the story than adding all this dramatic effect lmao… it’s just how i feel. people obviously enjoy diff things & channels can run it how they want, but imo you shouldn’t feel pressured to appear on camera as maybe there’s people like me who also are put off or indifferent but listen still. edit: also having an avatar could be another alternative! mr black’s makes me cringe bc it’s very try hard, but if you look at commentary channels, like cecil mcfly’s more recent videos or tro, they have nicely made avatars & they’re not made to be funny or particularly edgy. they’re just there & a touch to the video. if interested, you could find someone to commission. i am an artist myself but ya you could ask anyone to make one!

I'm curious, do True Crime Fans prefer to watch videos with the narrator on screen discussing case information or do you prefer not to see the narrator of the case? Let me know in the comments why you would or would not prefer this!
I'm considering making a few true crime videos where I talk on camera instead of just into a microphone. I am trying to explore ways of growing this channel further. It's hard though when you don't know the in's and out's like more experienced true crime Youtubers do.
