Today in 1868 German physicist Arnold Sommerfeld was born. A great scientist in his own right, he is most known for being a wildly successful teacher of physics - nurturing talents such as Hans Bethe, Werner Heisenberg and Linus Pauling. As a student himself, he was a member of a boisterous fraternity, and carried a duelling scar on his face his whole life.🤺

In the late 1920s he visited Madras. The then-college student, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, found out about his visitation, and met him. It was during this meeting that Arnold introduced Chandra to the latest advances in physics, including about new quantum physics, and the statistics of Fermi and Dirac. This new knowledge, and Ralph Fowler's paper on white dwarf stars, paved the way for Chandra's early papers on limiting mass theory. ❤
