That design was so cool, everything about the OT had such a beautiful never seen before aesthetic.

There is no need except that practical and mechanical effects are 1000x better than any CGI.

It's a shame. While you could theoretically build a drone like this nowadays to actually hover without showing the fans (would be tough, but doable), it's still better IMO to do location filming because you get a sense of realism with the acting that you just don't get in a green-screen room.

The Hoth probe scene in the first minutes of the movie sold me on the realism. Probably cheaper nowadays to do the practical effect in Norway, than CGI with mixed results.

Great picture and big thank you for those whom managed a way to make us dream and believe of a new world

The three real Star Wars movies all look so much better than the fake Star Wars movies that came after them. The final Star Wars movie was released May 25, 1983.

Yeah, but this is why some older movies look more real than some newer ones... Glancing at some modern Disney SFX...

So sad Lucas sold to Disney. Used to love Star Wars. Now it's all associated with an evil corporation we refuse to support in any way. They are dying slowly fortunately.

It should still be done that way. A puppet or even a model has a real presence in film. Something that is very difficult to replicate with CGI.

Star Wars Update
Filming the practical Probe Droid model (Finse, Norway, March 1979) for The Empire Strikes Back. This is when you had to set up a physical track for something like this to move, no need for that today (and no need to physically build the model or even travel to the snow in Norway).
