Do video games need demos?

@GoodGamer3000

Apparently, some people will pirate games as a way to try them before buying. Why not give them a legitimate way to do that?

Demos are great for players who are unsure whether they'd like the game. A bad demo though, can hurt it and push away potential players. Some genres present their first level/chapter as a "demo" - a prologue of kind

Honestly, for me, its nice when there is a demo, but I never expect one

Depends on how popular it is imo but having a demo is usually better than not having one. But it doesn't "need" one I guess

Stanley parable demo is one of the greatest works of art ever created

“need” is the question here. with youtube having countless videos and reviews on whatever game you want it really doesn’t need a demo. in addition you can refund the game if you don’t like it

Demos can help you find stuff and bugs you never knew existed to improve your game

The Unrailed 2 demo came out a couple of days ago. My friend wanted us to buy the game when it came out, but I've been really skeptical. We played the demo together last night and I actually had a lot of fun. So, in that case the demo is the only reason I will buy the game when it comes out because it changed my opinion of the game. It also created an avenue for my friend to convince me I would like it

depends on the game.. if it's for example another NFS or sth I wanna play, I don't need one. but if it's a game with an unusual mechanic or where I don't wanna watch playthroughs to know more about the mechanics (spoilers and such) I would love a demo.. the newest Zelda is a good example.. I couldn't really grasp the concept of how it will work properly in the game bc the Mechanics were explained shallowly.. I was hoping there was a demo.. wasn't tho.. could play it on the switch of a friend and figured out I didn't like it :) if I had bought it I would have been annoyed, so yeah.. I'm all for demos if it's sth new or unusual just to see if you can manage the game mechanics:D

The answer is a "it depends" sadly, considering sometimes a demo gives the whole game away, or the demo just gives enough to let people decide to buy the game. It might benefit going around game piracy (as a percentage of people pirate to try the game out)

Demos are a great way to see if you are gonna like the game or not. Yeah, it might mean a few less sales, but it will mean more positive interaction with your player base instead of people buying the game and hating it and crapping all over it online.

Appreciate you putting the result as a option, sometimes I just want to see the results

No, if you trust the company you are buying from will meet expectations and / or have reviews from others. video game demos would not be necessary in that case. However, there are many benefits to having a demo. As a creator, you would get feedback and be informed of bugs and glitches most players may encounter when playing allowing for easy access to more ideas on how to improve your game based on players needs and wants from the game.

@Nxtfog

They need: Demos LAN/WIFI connection ability Completely offline mode (Depending on the type of game) Cloud save And they should be free of hypocritical political messages

@Croadly

Yes! Especially if it takes more than 2 hours (max time played before steam will deny your refund) to get to the main gameplay loop

To me, it depends on the game. If you do a good enough job presenting the actual gameplay of the game through your videos/screenshots/etc., then it might not need a demo. It's always nice to have though.

I doubt I've ever played a demo. Assuming I'll like a game, I might watch a few videos and read the reviews. Afterwards I decide if I'll buy it, and if I don't like it, it's usually reletively easy to refund it.

Demos are a test to see how it goes and obviously people can give feedback + the people get an understanding if they like the game or not so yes
