I love hearing about game design, but I don't think it's something that I'd ever do myself

Your classic format of taking a novel game mechanic and slicing up how it works is something I think I and others will always love. Though your developing series was a must-watch too

Please, take note: saying we just play games doesn't mean we want to know ONLY about playing games. Their design choices are also really interesting!

I'm a creator, but not in the games space! I make music, but I love seeing how things get made, especially games. I also greatly enjoy how you break down concepts of design and development! After about a decade of watching you, I feel like my eyes have been opened so much, I can see the matrix. Thanks, Mark!

I’ve recently begun my delve into the indie scene and your videos have been invaluable to me! If you’re looking for ideas, I’ve been struggling to find any resources on the “secret back-end” of indie dev (press releases, trademarks/IP handling, fundraising, conventions, porting, all the real-world parts!). seems like a fairly untapped but useful niche(?)

I work with tabletop games and what I love the most about the channel are the deep analysis of mechanics, breakdowns of design processes and general insights into how/why/when/to whom games work!

I don't play games or make games. I don't really know why I enjoy GMTK regardless, but I do

I really enjoy game design, I just think that the overhead associated with video games isn’t fun to me. If I were to design anything it’d be a board game

I loved watching Boss Keys and it’s a shame we never gone one in awhile

I actually graduated school as a game artist, but regret that decision. I still love games and game design, i dont want to work in the miserable industry though.

I really loved the boss keys series exploring how metroidvanias design their worlds. I also liked the series where you talk about games with interesting mechanics and how they're implemented to make a fun game. I don't design games nor have any particular drive to, but I love hearing about how games are designed

Not a game dev, but an author, and your approach to learning game design with Boss Keys was always how I approached the books I read. "What made this enjoyable for me? How did they solve this issue or this limitation? What can I learn from this thing that is so beloved?" Thumbs up, Mark! You do great work!

As a professional indie developer, I find your videos about what the games can be and how they achieve that very heart warming, especially in contrast to the voices focusing on what the games should/shouldn't be.

GMTK is my favorite channel on YouTube. I am not a developer but love to learn the interesting mechanics behind games and Enjoy your break!

Used to be but left the industry, to take care of my family but still teach from time to time. And just love your videos

I'm a professional game developer, and your videos are part of what pushed me to pursue my passion

I was a game développer in the 80s and 90s in the 8bit era. I'm fascinated by how the game development has evolved. I will for sure make some games in the future again "in the new way". Already made a first try with Godot. But I can't call myself a game developper nowadays. It's much different. Almost all contraint have disapeared.

I don't actively do game development, but I've learned enough about it from having done it as a hobby previously that every once in a while I'll help out some friends with their game development endeavours

I’m a professional game developer (I’ve been in AAA for nearly 5 years now), but I started watching this channel in college when I was studying game design. This channel truly taught me a massive amount, most importantly how to think critically about what I think works and doesn’t work about what I’m playing. I truly think that skill is one of the most important things that can separate a developer from a player.

I majored in game design and minored in programming and am currently working as a non-gamedev developer. I've tried making games with a custom engine in my free time but keep running into minor obstacles that I feel the need to solve. The latest obstacle's solution was to switch to Linux without any prior experience which brought its own set of problems, thankfully none that haven't been solvable yet. I've designed my own programming language to solve my problem with creating moddable games but I decided I need to draw the line somewhere if I want to get a game out within any foreseeable future. It's amazing to me how much you've managed to produce, video and game wise. I'm hoping that biding my time will eventually pay off and I'm grateful that I can learn from your experience in the meantime. If I do find success I know it'll be because I've stood on the shoulders of giants. Anyways, I'll put my vote on hobbyist, as much as it pains me to admit that that's what I am

Game Maker's Toolkit
Hi! I'm currently on a break after Word Play and GMTK Game Jam 2025. But I'm thinking about what sort of content I should make next. To help me better understand my audience, please let me know which of these describes you best!
