I remember reading this fact in a revolutionary war book back in fifth grade. Even had a drawn image of General Washington presenting the Purple Heart to the continental marines

It was actually the Badge Of Merit , in 1780 it was roughly 3 years after the US declared its independence, the Badge Of Merit was introduced and given to decorated squad leaders in the American Revolution, it later became a symbolized badge by congress’ secretary of war Henry Knox (sparking the name Fort Knox) 2 years before the purple badges introduction in 1782. ever since it’s been recognized as the oldest U.S Militsry decoration you can find. It’s actually illegal to sell any military decorations authorized by the US Armed Forces congress…
