Hearing the raw, unfiltered experiences of Cassie during her life with Diddy has a ball of grief sitting in my throat. There are so many parallels between her experience, my experience with my father, and what I witnessed with my mother.
That being said, what infuriates me is people asking dumb questions like “why didn’t she just leave?”. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times—It takes a woman at least seven times to leave her abuser for various reasons, before succeeding. One of them being, a woman who loves a man who is also abusing her doesn’t necessarily want to leave. She wants the abuse to stop.
It took years before I wanted my father to either stop existing or for me to get away from him completely. He was my father, and I still loved what I knew to be the good in him.
But wait, Cassie did try to leave, which brings me to another reason why it takes victims many attempts before getting away.
70% of intimate partner homicides are committed while the victim is trying to escape. Y’all saw the hotel video. It’s not about leaving, it’s about leaving SAFELY.
The frightening reality is that abusers and sexual predators aren’t just that. No person exists only behaving badly. Life would be much simpler if the monsters in our midst always acted like monsters. If that were so, we’d be able identify them easily, we’d never doubt our instincts, and they couldn’t manipulate anyone.
Praying for shields of protection over Cassie and everyone who is testifying against this madman.
