Wealth building I only understood in my early forty...what a waste but still a blessing to have this knowledge now!

Wish I knew that in my 20's, barely figured it out at 32 but been investing the last 3 years, makes me sad that I could have made more progress with compound interest. But I still got at least another 30 years of work / 30 years of work to add to it.

I supported husband through three degrees, never found a cheaper apartment the first six years! Water sewer garbage included. Husband rode the bus to college. We have had reliable, gas efficient cars. He graduated and accepted a job out of state. We had used Bureau of Labor Statistics to look for a job in a city with high pay and the most positions in his field! We put most of our stuff in storage for 26 months and moved into a 525 sq ft apartment (all utilities but phone included) and paid off debt! Housing and transportation are your greatest expenses! We bought a 91 Toyota Tercel for $5600 Spring of 1998. Drove her 9 more years. We bought a 2002 Chevy Prizm for $13k new. She turned 23, still driving her! Paid her off in 2005, no car payment since! 3.5 years ago we paid cash for a Camry.) We bought a house on a busline to work (one car family for 2/3rds of our almost 27 year marriage and husband rode the bus to work so we could invest in a 401k!) Best advice we took at 31&32 years old!: "Dont wake up in your late 40s and wish you had started investing sooner!" It has been almost 19 years we have got the full employer 401k match! We bought the house in 2006, months later the property taxes were reassessed and went up $300 a month! We were ok because we didnt have a car payment! We havent in almost 20 years. Im 50 now! My health has sucked! We dont even know if we will get social security! Someday you wont be able to work! Invest!

This guy is awesome, I think all kids from under privileged areas should have to watch this man’s videos… Than write a thesis on what they’ve learned but they won’t so sad.

*money above an emergency fund Everybody at my government job is like “are you going to sell your $60k car if you lose your job?” Of course the answer is no since I have a 1+ year emergency fund. That’s the other purpose of money. It gives you time and options whereas people without money have to scramble to find another job to keep all their bills paid. If I ever get fired, I’m getting more tech certifications and making a big career move.

Do not spend the rest of your life working for money but rather spend that same timeframe making that money work for you....

I’m 51 years old and i don’t have anything that i own. I only have 30 thousand dollars in my safe. I never could be consistent not because i didn’t want to. But life just threw me so many curb balls. In other words i don’t have nothing to show for. I’m alone. It is was hard because i picked up a felony at age 21 and did a 3 year stretch with a strike. I wasted so many years.
