A Mini History of Aberdeen’s Landmarks:

St Machar’s Cathedral – Founded in the 12th century and completed in the 16th century, this granite cathedral in Old Aberdeen is famous for its unique heraldic ceiling and twin spires. It remains one of the finest medieval buildings in Scotland.

King’s College, Old Aberdeen – Established in 1495, it is Scotland’s third oldest university. Its iconic crown tower is a symbol of Aberdeen and reflects the city’s deep academic and religious heritage.

New King’s Building – Part of the University of Aberdeen’s expansion, this structure complements Old King’s with its historic yet evolving academic presence.

Marischal College – Built in 1837 and expanded in 1906, it is one of the largest granite buildings in the world. Today, it houses Aberdeen City Council and is a striking example of Scottish Gothic architecture.

Together, these landmarks represent Aberdeen’s long history of faith, education, and civic pride – all carved from the city’s world-famous granite.
