Man, I doubt you’ll read this or even acknowledge it, but I will say it anyway. I don’t really know how else to reach out to you, so I’m doing it here. Your videos just randomly started showing up in my YouTube feed recently. I’d never heard you or heard of you, so I’m not sure how it happened exactly. It must’ve been when I was looking up tutorials for country guitar licks or something 😂😂😂. That said, I’m a huge fan of country music, from the 50s on up through the 90s and very early 00s which is my era. When your video of one of your first tv performances showed up and you had your long hair, I was like man, “I love seeing the brown man singing heartland!” That last part may not make much sense to you, but to me it was a moment of pride. While I’m not actively pursuing country music, I do find it to be the genre I write and sing the best in, so I play/perform quite a bit of it. I’m a member of the Black Opry organization based out of Nashville and that organization exists to give us brown and black folks a place to resonate as musicians and performers amongst the country idiom. Now the real reason I’m writing this is because seeing your videos, the more recent ones, really gives me hope as a performer. I’ve been successfully and actively running my band Bacon Grease for the last 9 years in the Wilmington, NC area. (You can look us up here on YouTube under “The Official Bacon Grease”.) however, I am now 39 years old and don’t really make the kind of money to genuinely sustain this career path I’ve chosen. However, it’s the ONLY thing I want to do and it’s the only thing that I’m fairly decent at that I can do with minimal frustration. Everyday I wonder what the long term goal is and if I’m wasting my time and if by doing this I’m going to miss out on living life and enjoying the things I watch my peers and friends enjoy as they live their common lives that are fairly predictable. Seeing these videos of you still going at it and giving it your all, still giving a show, still having fun, still making people smile, still enjoying it(at least I hope you are), and still maintaining your integrity by doing this independently, or so it seem that you’re independent. Just know that means a lot to me and gives me a sense of hope that I may not end up playing arenas and selling out tix anywhere, but I can still do this music for my living for a long time if I continue to keep my eyes fixed ahead. Thank you for what you do, you inspire me very much and I hope someday we can meet and you can give me some of your nuggets of wisdom that you’ve collected over the years both in the industry and independent of it. And how to keep a band together 😂😂😂😂. Also, I’ve had the same band members for 9 years, I’m just the youngest guy, that’s why I said that last thing. 😂 Have a good day Neal, and if by chance this reaches you, I hope we can exchange communication!
