According to a theory, The Moon used to be a planet called Theia that crashed into Earth around 4 billion years ago. Theia didn't hit Earth head on, it instead hit the edge and started to break. Earth's gravity pulled the nearly destroyed Theia into orbit and where it started to circle around Earth and pull in the chunks of Earth that broke off. I like to think of the Moon being a bully that got karma.
