What is your weirdest memory of using the early internet in the late 90s and early 2000s?

@Zymaric

I remember signing onto my AOL account and the Home Screen was some Nintendo themed menu. It was SO cool and now it seems like lost media! This was like 2003.

I was maybe 6 years old and managed to find a site that was basically a virtual pet cemetery. A forum-like thing where people who'd lost their pets went everyday to write really heartfelt letters, tell them what life was like without them, etc. My dad saw me read that and couldn't conjure a better answer than "what the FUCK are you reading"

I started using the internet around 2005 at 6 years old. I mostly just played webkinz and flash games, but I surfed a bit and remember those "You are the 1,000,000 visitor!!!" pop ups. Also, the family computer somehow got a virus that caused adult videos to randomly pop up on the screen... So that was interesting 😭

I'm not sure if this really happened or was just some weird dream I had when I was a kid, but I vaguely remember a website that allowed you to enter two names of any person (or just text), and then those said names appear in a video. The video showed a woman talking about something (I'm not really sure what), and then it showed the first name tattooed on her body, I think? Then a man shows up in the video, and there's the second name also tattooed on his body. He blows a kiss at the camera, and then the video ends. Yeah, it sounds like a weird dream, but I feel like it really did happen.

I think the internet today is far weirder than it was back then.

My first memory of the internet is browsing fansites about the TV show Charmed while at my moms workplace. My sister and I would literally print out whole websites bc we didn't have the internet at home.

Flash games and virtual world websites. There were so many obscure ones that I can’t even remember the names of.

It wasn't really the first time I used it, but the first time it was explained to me. I was sitting on the floor of my dad's study and he was explaining the internet. He told me you could look up and find anything. I was really into Garfield comics at the time so I asked him "Can you look up Garfield?" He told me I could. I was amazed that I could just spawn the orange cartoon cat in front of me and I didn't need to go to the comics section of the paper. I probably asked about other things I liked as a kid, believing my dad less and less as it was impossible for me to imagine that you could just bring anything in the world onto your computer screen.

2002 maybe. I went online on AT&T dial-up on our Windows 98 computer and I came across a flash game that took place in a run-down pizza joint bathroom, and you could click things to get various interactions. I remembered if you clicked either the door or a sign it would say "Hot pizza" in a deep man's voice. I've never been able to find this ever again, nor any mentions anywhere, and I have absolutely no idea how I could have come across this at 6-7 years old. Maybe my dad found it online somewhere and let me click around in it for a while. I've legitimately been trying to find stuff on this any time I think about it for the past 20 years.

Getting a pervert arrested in 2003. I have since moved on from the site but PDF files (there is a reason I put it that way, he was the extreme type) were even worse back then.

I was like 6, and I discovered fanfiction. Eventually I stumbled upon the "weird" stuff. After that I added "rated e for everyone" at the end of the searches 😂

I was playing a Mario flash game, and the "18+ ADULTS ONLY" ads (my grandpa's computer everyone) on the website I was on caused the game to lag so much that it broke the game physics and kept tossing me out of bounds.

I used to play Neo-pets online in the early 2000's and i had fun but it could get weird with the chats and the people.

I remember me using windows XP. But getting the “you are an idiot” virus. Not knowing how to get rid of it. My dad figured out how to get rid of it I think. It was a weird memory

I was a really big fan of Toby Keith back in the day and I tried to go to his website shortly after we got the Internet at our house. I must've gone to the wrong site because a bright blue screen popped up with "ADULTS ONLY" flashing up at the top. I felt really weird/guilty and didn't use the computer at all for like a week after. I still have no idea what website I actually went to.
