We just had one of the most unforgettable off-road adventures in Romania so far. We were taking a pretty tricky route up the mountains near the Transalpina: lots of rocks, lots of climbing, but as always, the Hilux handled it very well.
Then, suddenly, the track was blocked by a huge fallen tree.
Two men were already there, sawing it up. Naturally, we stopped and started chatting (one of our favourite things about Romania – people are always up for a chat). And before we knew it, one of them invited us for food with a local farmer just a bit further up the track.
Now, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from years of overlanding, it’s this: always say yes to unexpected invitations.
And wow, are we glad we did.
That afternoon, we ended up spending the evening high up in the mountains at a shepherd’s hut. Sheep everywhere, wood smoke, wild dogs barking, and a small wooden cabin.
We had to leave Lewie in the car because the place was guarded by ten enormous Carpathian sheepdogs. Not exactly Labrador-friendly.
We helped milk the sheep, watched them make fresh local cheese, and sat down for a proper Romanian dinner with the whole crew including, of course, the obligatory homemade moonshine shots.
It’s moments like these that make us fall in love with travel all over again.
And honestly? We said it in the last post, but now we’re sure: Romania is the best overland destination in Europe right now. Off-road freedom, wild camping, amazing people, and stories at every turn.
