Our family lost an important friend in that war. There was such great, exciting optimism in 1960. By the end of that war, optimism had been replaced by cynicism.

It was a war between the northern Hausa and the Eastern Igbo, when the latter tried to secede and form their own sovereign State and the former fought to bring them back to the fold.
