If you pick up the drops before the spirits of light and dark release, its pre hardmode. If you pick them up after, its hardmode.

Technically the Wall of Flesh drops the items before hardmode begins, it was at one point possible to leave the game with WoF loot before the game triggered hardmode. It was patched as of 1.4

Pre hardmode, the spirits of light and dark are released after WoF dies, but if you have a slow computer it will take a bit longer, while the drops are instant

Depending on the speed your device wants to start hardmode it can be either

After you defeat it it still needs time to get to 100%for Hardmode to begin

With my phphine being trash and it taking 30 secs after killing WOF for the spirits of light and dark releases so yep pre hardmode for me
