We live in an age where shark movies have become a bit of a joke. There are very few that get me excited anymore, and only a couple that have ever been made that I think are truly deserving of praise in terms of story and quality. But there are a couple coming out this year that have caught my eye. Fear Below, which appears to be an Australian film that takes place in the 40s, looks pretty awesome. The mob hires a small dive crew to recover the contents of a vehicle that was driven into a freshwater river, but there are large bull sharks in the area. The mob then forces them into the water with threats of force. I looks really well done with practical effects, which is rare now days. It's a more original take on the whole shark thing. Then there's "Dangerous Animals," which doesn't give too many details in the trailer, but it looks like it could be the most original shark film in a very, very long time. It appears to be less about the sharks, and more about a serial killer posing as the captain of a cage diving charter to lure young women out to sea, where he ties them to a winch, makes them bleed, then dangles them over the water until their blood attracts sharks... he then feeds them to the sharks and films it 😳 It was a simple trailer but looks incredibly disturbing. Especially once you realize what's going on and you can see how many victims' videos are on his trophy shelf. Hollywood isn't really doing original much anymore... but both of these movies are looking promising for the genre.
